When faced with a situation like this one, we must consider what the two must be feeling. Hermia did not elope, she would have been forced to marry someone she does not love, become a nun, or be killed.
Someone who is in love with a person does not want to even think about being without their other half. This means the thought of being with another is completely unbearable. To demand someone who is in love to marry someone else causes unfathomable pain to the couple. This is exactly what Lysander and Hermia have to go through.
On top of this demand, Hermia is told that she must marry Demetrius or she must become a nun or be killed. For her own protection and general well being, I think it is right for her and Lysander to have eloped. True love is an unbreakable bond. This means that when faced with a challenge such as this, the only reasonable response is to keep the love and hide away from the things that are trying tear them apart. If they had not done this, they would have not been able to love the ones who they loved and would have been forced to be with someone they did not love. This would have caused unbelievable unhappiness This is why , I believe, it is ok for Lysander and Hermia to have eloped.

It is true that these two had very strong feeling for each other and that not choosing to eloping could have been dangerous, but we cannot ignore the fact that her father, who is the main authority in her life, ordered her to marry Demitrius and refused to let her marry Lysander. God placed our parent in our lives be an authority figure, thus we need to listen to their words and heed their advice. Even though her father seemed cruel in not letting Hermia marry Lysander, her true love, she still should have listened to him no matter how hard it was. Fear of harm is not a good reason to defy authority.

I must say, Julie, you’re very convincing. 🙂 However, we don’t know that Egeus had now reason to keep Hermia from marrying Lysander. While it is probably not the case, it is possible that he saw something in Lysander that he didnt see fit for his daughter.

Hermia did not have to marry Lysander or die. She had other options. She could have lived and become a nun. If Egeus, her authority, did not want them to get married than they shouldn’t have eloped. Many times when people are in a relationship they think they are so in love that they have to get married. Sometimes, even in these situations the parents may not approve. Parents have more wisdom then their children. They, most of the time, have reasons for this decision. If the authority says the people can’t get married then they can not get married
